Boycott Silver Dollar City

BIRKY!!!
Rockaway Beach's supporters saw a $100 million casino venture as a way to revitalize the region. The town is nine miles from family-oriented Branson. An anti-amendment group was formed by Peter Herschend, the man behind Silver Dollar City. Late Tuesday, Herschend celebrated the defeat of the casino plan, even though the campaign had split Taney County.

So, all the fears of increased crime and such quoted by the people against amendment 1 was nothing but CRAP. The true motivation was the fear that Herschend would lose a few million dollars from his billion dollar business down there.

I supported rockaway beach and I will still support and go to silver dollar city also.... It wasnt them that defeated the vote,It was the whole state of Missouri.......

Not really sure how this thread relates to racing, but thank goodness the people of Missouri had the common sense to vote against more gambling. The lottery and gambling have put such a drain on the economy of Missouri. Every dollar spent gambling is one less dollar that could be spent on goods and services that stimulates the economy. Gambling has no positive effect on the economy. Dollars do not fall out of the sky and the only way for the economy to grow is by putting people to work.

I'm with you legendary1. I am sick of hearing all the lies about how gambling helps a local economy and schools. It hasn't happened since the boats came. Missourians clearly spoke on this issue.

Now....back to racing...hmmmm should I go to that 100 lapper at Belleville...?

I would have voted for the casino if they would have came right out and said we want a casino. Instead they danced around it until almost the end. Now I'm dead set aganst it

I have nothing against the folks who visit casinos. I have a problem with those politicians and gaming commitees who said casinos would help the schools, roads, and other areas of need. Promises were made but never kept. Imagine if they had kept there word. No school would have to cut jobs or activities or even classes as some did. To be honest with you Im relieved that the casino bid lost its vote. I like that Branson and Silver Dollar City along with Table Rock Lake is still a place 100% dedicated to your family. No disrespect intended but in todays world there are enough places that we can gamble.

Maybe if they'd asked for funding for a major new dirt track operation...hmmmmmmmmm

Do most of you even realize how much money goes to the state in taxes from casino's each year?Look at Illinois for example all casino's pay the state 50% of there revenuse each year and 3 pay 70%.that money alone helps with schools,roads,etc.etc.etc.If you live in Illinois be glad they tax the casino's the way they do or it would come out of your pocket.Illinois passed that law to help reduce the debt.just imagine if the casino's werent there how much taxes you would pay?

thanx shawn

In Alton, the Alton Belle (which is an eyesore) has been here for over a decade, and crime has risen steadily every year since. Go on the boat during the day and you will see little old ladies spending their retirement money. Go on there at night and the tables are full of high-roller thugs that fund their gambling habit through their drug sales. Meanwhile, our school system is struggling financially. Where's the wonderful tax money at? It certainly isn't coming back to the town that supports them. Yup, Alton has become a morally and financially challenged armpit of the metro east. Thank you so much Argosy Gaming.

How many kids don't have A quality meal on the table or good shoes on their feet? How many kids don't get a new bike like most others? How many people have lost their cars or houses because they couldn't make the payments, because the gambling casino's got it instead?

We got by a long time with out them. We can get by with the few we have now.

Thugs and grannies, eh? So my co-workers that live in Alton that visit the boat from time to time are thugs too? I guess all the casinos in Vegas are the same way?

And no, not really related to racing, but hey, not the first thread on here, right?

Look at the big picture people, the people against Amendment 1 weren't against it because of moral, safety, crime or religious concerns. No, come to find out, they were organized by a person who was afraid he might loose a percentage of his multi-million dollar income. So instead, he gets to stay rich, and Rockaway Beach suffers. Has anyone ever considered how much tourism Silver Dollar City takes away from the surrounding small towns?? Yet everyone is quick to defend them. And I bet he doesn't contribute near as much tax wise as a casino would.

Now, here's the irony: How much of the gross revenue paid into the casino in the form of bets is actually state welfare paid out to the needy in the first place? It is widely known that people who have money and don't need welfare to get by do not frequent casinos on a regular basis. Gambling has the strongest attraction to those who are desperately in need of a windfall, not those who are already comfortable. Casinos prey on the "get rich quick" mentality of the poor; they contribute nothing of any value at all to the local economy, and it has been proven time and again that many social problems come with a casino. On Indian land, where there are casinos, it is a common complaint from the Indians that only a few are gettting filthy rich off the casino revenue, while the community as a whole is destroyed. Do not ever believe the lies put out by the gaming industry; they have no reason to tell you the truth, as this would cost them the chance of billions in revenue in the long term. The gaming industry is not your buddy, your friend or your big brother: they are blood ****ing leeches only there to take your money.

And what do you think they said in their ads? What, a "floating gaming facility" wasn't clear enough?

hey doug just because the money is not put back into the community why put that on the casino's.they pay the state therefore wouldnt it be the elected official you help put into office that would be the blame there ?

We got by a long time with out them. We can get by with the few we have now.

again why put the casino's at blame because someone cant control them self.I dont see you saying this about an alcoholic or drug addict who chooses to spend there money on that instead of on their family.

t.nie

why would the casino's have any reason to lie it is pretty common sense that all casino's have the advantage.they make no promisses to anyone.why put it off on someone else besides the people that decide to spend all there time and money in a place trying to win big when alll reality they know they wont.

Also dont be so quick to who would happen to visit quite often cause you can name it and i have seen it when it comes to how people really act in a casino.i have also seen poeple lose their families,house,cars,busnisses,etc.etc.

I can tell you that I voted against the thing and had no idea that Silver Dollar City was even involved. The money you speak of to help the local economy and the schools is not going where they "say" it is going. It is lining some rich dudes pocket and I think that the people of Missouri are just fed up with the lies.

Now, lets look forward to a GREAT weather weekend for racing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
