Can I run mercruiser engine

S-10 merCRUISER

New Member
Question , Can I run a s-10 ministock with a mercruiser 3.0 boat engine (stock bore and stroke for mercruiser) same look as 2.5 chevy along with a stock chevy head ? the rules say stock engine but does not say it has to be chevy , just says head must be chevy to chevy body ? I have a lot of these 3.0 mercruiser blocks just laying around and from what I understand the extra displacement would help since not much else can be modified

Or is this a no no ?
Thanks for information if I decide to build one I want to keep it cheap

welcome

Welcome to the board s-10 mercruiser, if the members want an engine in a race truck that was not originally a "stock" OPTION IN A S-10 than it sounds like your in:D Early 90's Ford (SVO)was producing a tall block 2.3 that can produce 4.0 litres:D

It's not a Chevy engine is it? Chevy to Chevy, Ford to Ford etc. I don't think they would allow it.

I believe the engine is produced for Mercruiser by GM and it is based on the 2.5 chevy engine, only with a larger displacement. I will find out. They look the same.

no, because

dad did some research on the 3.0 merine division motors. they only produced them for boats not in any of chevy's vehicles

Wolfman-5

I agree with wolfman-5, now the question is are there any out there now being raced in RAMS events?Jon Reando

these 3.0 liter engines are based on the 65-70 nova ,aka chevy II. they were 153 ci.in the nova's. they took the same block, made it 4 inch bore, but a 3.625 stroke crank in it,that took it to 181 cid. were they in a stock s-10? nope. never. the last production these basic engines in any car was 77-78 pontiac sunbird. they were still the 4 in. bore block, but were desroked,to 151 cid.. gm still produces the motors in mexico. they just call them mercruisers. they will bolt right in to where a 2.5 once was,but with the intake/exhaust now on the same side, gotta change the exhaust. i think you should allow them. they will kick a 2.3 ford's butt. i know this for a fact.:)

mercruisers

These engines have been in mini stocks from the very beginning in 1990. But the engines would not hold together . There has been attempts , but like I said , they have never finished a nite of racing . The things that need to be done to these motors to last are illegal for the mini stock rules . As far as the motor being legal I myself would have to say yes , since some of the older Pintos and Mustangs originally came out with 2.0's and were changed to 2.3's, also some Mustangs came out with 302's and changed to 2.3's . Also the S-10's were changed from 2.8's or 3.4's , had to add the S-10 so the Ford guys didn't think I was picking on them . LOL This is just my opinion ........... "The Hustler"

Ah the big question

S-10 mercruiser, can you arrange a time for me to look at one of your engines? thanks Jon

i dont know how you guys interpret the rules, but i would say no,its not a stroker, cuz its not a modified part, and has a gm part #,and it came stock in an engine. not a racing piece. .it's how you guys look at the rules. j/m/o. art.

If we're going to allow boat motors, why not just fill in the infield with water and start boat races, too? I'd love to see a swamp buggy class started up somewhere up here - put it together for me and I'll drive the hell out of it!!!

I'm just wondering - is someone ALREADY running this motor and we just don't know it yet?

if someone were to bring a sunbird( rear driver) or a monza, olds starfire,or a buick sky hawk and run with you guys, this engine would be in it,and you would have to let it run. hmmmm... what a thought. and as far as it not holding together, this engine is way stronger than it's cousin, the 2.5. if you want to get technical, there are some production boats out there with the 2.5 in them. looks like the swamp buggys are gonna happen!!

3.0 was produced by GM. It was never in an S-10 but a 1.9 escort flywheel was never produced behind a 2.3 pinto or mustang was it?

sunbird

So the Mercruiser came in a Sunbird,Skyhawk, starfire. Hmmmmmmm, your right art to be king of the ministocks I'll have to have one. I guess its up to the membership what the club has to allow. Still have not found in the minutes anything saying I cannot run a V-8:)
