Cash For Clunkers... Sad

I'm not sure where you got your statistics that show a lot of low income people are driving cars that get worse than 18mpg. But lets assume that it is true.

First of all, if you are a low income person and are driving a car like that with todays gas prices and economic conditions....your too stupid to qualify for anything and should just give up and take public transportation. You probably have 20" rims and a $3K sound system installed on your $500 piece of junk too.

But all joking aside lets continue.

By giving or selling those misfortunate people another newer or possibly lower mileage car from this program that gets only marginally better gas mileage than their current vehicle, we have now prolonged the process of removing all the clunkers from the road. These are cars that are already 10mpg lower than the old governmental standards and nearly 20mgp lower than the new standards. They need to be off the road asap and not be given a second life.....especially a second life in the hands of someone dumb enough to drive them for another 10 years.

Many of those of whom you speak may have a current car that is getting 12-15mpg but is on its last leg. A newer used car may soon be a necessity for them. There are literally thousands of makes and models of used cars out there on car lots for sale that get much better than the 18mpg automobiles we are taking off the road. Most of them priced considerably cheaper than the $3500 the government has minimally invested in the clunker you want them to purchase or be given. If I am a low income car shopper, I want something that is going to give me the best mpg I can afford, not something the government wants off the road because of its poor mpg performance. Most "low income" people in your scenario could probably afford to purchase a newer used car that gets better mpg and come out ahead financially as a result of the money saved on gas consumption. And truthfully, if they can't afford it....they do need to be on public transportation.
I'm not sure how else to explain it to you. Either you get it or you don't

One of the purposes for this Cash For Clunkers programs is to remove the gas hogs from the road. Not to recycle them.

If you're so against cutting back on oil usage why do you support racing?
How much oil and fuel are you needlesly consuming hauling your car to and from the track and in the race car itself. How are you going to get a truck to haul your rig when the mpg standards take affect?

First..., I support cutting oil and gas usage. I'm not against it.
Second... I don't own or haul a race car to the track.

If we do reduce our oil usage, they will probably just raise the prices that they sell it to us for, thus raising the prices at the pumps......hell it's already creaping back up.....JMO

All I know is we are in trouble if the democrates keep control and get alot of this crap passed. The only way the government is effective is when its 50/50. I am not a republican.

Sooo,
I see the King is parroting his hero's. He speaks from both sides of his mouth.

Read this http://www.stlracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134309&page=4

that volvo had to be worth more than 4500 the only good deal would be for old cars not worth 4500.

this whole thing don't make sense you get rid of a clunker but the dealer still has vehicles to sell that gets the same or less mileage than the clunker typical govt b s

Well you don't own or haul a racecar but I'm assuming you're tied to or own king eddies chicken that sponsors Hammerle's late model. If this is the case aren't you financially backing a sport that is a large consumer of fuel and oil, including all the oil it takes to manufacture tires that only last a few nights. Even if you don't sponsor his latemodel it seems hypocritical of you to be a racing fan and an environmental liberal.

Yes, I do sponsor a racecar. Yes I believe that we should try to conserve where and when possible. Yes, I am for this program. No, I am not so far to the left and fanatical about it that I consider myself hypocricitcal to walk somewhere in the middle ground. And by no means am I an environmental liberal. Ask anyone who knows me.

Why can't all of you who are so in love with the letter (R) behind someones name admit that this is a workable and good program? Does it really hurt you that bad to admit when something proposed and linked to a Democrat works? You would think that after 8 years of failures and the past three years of the sh!tty state of the economy, you would be happy to see any kind of sucess in this country. Its just unbelievable.

I would be less against it if they just gave people a $4500 rebate without mandating the destruction of good cars ( or good street stock projects)
Either way how can we sustain our fast growing deficit. We can only print so much more money before inflation sky rockets. The chinese could already destroy us because they have bought so much of our debt.
I strongly disagree with the spend your way out of debt approach.

I have no problem saying I'm against the majority of politicians in both parties. The whole system is run on corruption and greed. I don't think either party represents me as a freedom loving, blue collar american!

I just think bush took alot of crap over gas prices etc. Gas is 2.60, shame on bush oh wait he is out of office now. Obama just isnt the guy to help us blue collar folks. Health care is about to be ruined. Its funny how he hammered bush about the deficiet and all he has done is spend spend.

I understand where you are coming from King, but why is general motors still selling engines for the old vehicles???I just bought 3 crate engines from gm, and one for my 95 gmc.My truck lasted 300,000 miles with the original engine, and i hope it lasts another 300,000 with this new engine. It only gets around 15 to 16 on the highway.Doesnt make sence to scrap 18 mile to the gallon engines, yet i can go to dealer and buy the same thing they just scrapped.By the way, your chicken is awesome.:D

Come on King, you say "Does it really hurt you that bad to admit when something proposed and linked to a Democrat works?", Then you turn around and inply the Republicans haven't done anything good "

BTW: I think this is a great plan I just wish it would have been passed 6 months or longer ago. I would much rather have seen this then the government buying an auto company.

the dealers can find you deals better than the clunker deaL bought a car that was listed at 19 its a program car listed at 22 I got it for 12 ,500 my clunker got better gas mileage got better mileage than anything on the lot had to get rid of it had no choice it made no sense in fixing it

If you can tell me something good the republicans have done in the last 3 years I will be more than happy to give credit where credit is due.

Perhaps the lawmakers did not assume thousands of people would be flocking to GM to purchase $2000 motors to be installed into worn out $500 automobiles. I certainly believe that your scenario will be the exception to the rule and not the norm.

Come on King, first it's 8 years of failures then you want me to show you anything in the past 3 years. You ask the republicans to give a little credit and you can't even do it yourself. It really doesn't matter what I bring up that a republican did you will find something wrong about it.
