Highland Trivia

I believe Danny Pacewick(sp) went over the back stretch wall years ago and ended up in the creek.

I think Tony Frazier and his brother ran a oldsmobile or pontiac , Rick Carter a buick, Rick Johnson a dodge, and the Issac brothers a ford. That was in the bombers. Not sure about the upper classes.
We ran an Oldsmobile Sportsman in 1988. Bad idea, couldn't keep it cool!

Was that the Wonder Acres car that Brian Wernle and Lance Deiters drove that year? I think they tried the Oldsmobile that year and Ron Sensel also tried it for a while but I think he spent more features on the trailor than on the track before going back to the Chevy. Also that year, a guy named John French #49 raced a Pontiac. I think the Sportsman rule back then was that Chevys and Fords had to run the 307 and 302 but you could run a 350 if you ran Oldsmobile or Pontiac.

I do remember the Isaac brothers running the Fords, I remember Blake Bueckman running a Pontiac but I think they let him run a Chevy motor in it, The Frazier brothers running an Oldsmobile, Joe Ruppel ran a Dodge driving for Doc Kapp. John French in that black 49 car with a Pontiac. Dale Beckmann ran a Ford in the sportsman class.

Anyone remember Steve Bovinett with those tuned headers on that slick looking yellow sportsman ? Sounded like a 6 cylinder running around there with its tounge hanging out !

Now dont quote me on these because I am not 100 % sure on this,

Does anyone remember what year Dandy Don Klein made his first and last debut at Highland ? Go ahead and answer because I dont remember what year it was.

And I think I remember Big Bill Faust beating an up and coming racer in the Twin 30's one year by the name of Scott Bloomquist ? Am I correct in saying this ?

Thanks Heimy.Blake Beuckman did run a pontiac, but it had a 305 chevy in it.Later was a 400 chevy.Crazy Bruce Behrens built his cars, and they were probally some of the nicest looking bombers to hit the track. Also dug up some old pics of Mark Ollers old chevelles/malibus.That car was cleaner than most street chevelles.

Yes,we won 1 Trophy Dash with it.

I think Brian Wernle won a feature with it at Brownstown and Lance Deiters and Randy Perkins had one of the best feature races you'll ever see at Highland. They ran side be side the entire race swapping the lead several times and I don't think they touched each other once. It was a photo finish and nobody knew who won until the announcer made the call.

While some bombers ran big blocks (with two barrels). And Belleville had stroker big blocks. What was the common engine for Modifieds and Sportsmans at Highland?

The common engine for the modifieds was the chevy 302 (327 block, 283 crank) and the sportsman was a 307. (283 block, 327 crank) 2bbl carb and intake similar to the street stock of today. Rules were such to keep belleville cars out.

Who ran Fords back then?

There were more but I remember Mark and Bob Faust running 302 Fords in a Mercury Capri and Rich Koerkenmeier with a 289 in a sportsman. There were some 352 Fords a few year earlier. Dennis Sellers had a Mustang body (I believe Walter Kuntz built) but was powered by Chevy

Who ran a Mopar (and figuratively wrote the book "racing on welfare" for his economical innovations)? (For a bonus can you name one of his economical methods?)

Herman's center steer was amazing. The super lightweight floor pan. The Monroe coil-overs ect. I was told (and believe) that Herman had the skill to weld shut a hole in a piston on his 340 dodge. When he switch to the black Dart his magic disappeared. I wished someone would give him a set of exhaust gaskets.

Who was "Powered by Jeep"?

The yellow car of Chris Bargetzi. He ran an AMC engine.( I was mean back then and would teach little kids to point at yellow paint on someones bumper and say "Bargetzi blood!")

6=8?

There was a 6 cylinder (Ford 300?). He didn't win much but he wasn't always last either.

Can you remember anyone running a Pontiac, Oldsmobile, or Buick?

There was a Pontiac in the modifieds a few years earlier but I can't remember who.

Most built their own engines. What was the name (builder) of Petroff's engine in the Super Fly?

Yes, Prototype

In 83 SARA had a few points races not at Highland. Where?

I believe there were four races for SARA points at Tri-City on Wednesday night. Alcohol was allowed that year and several blew their engines there.

I was in the stands by the main entrance so I ran out and around. The driver was missing and fuel was everywhere. Finally someone said he was standing by the fence.

180* headers, sounded like a bumble bee, 2nd in points?

The Flying Farmer was Bob Faust because his first year he brought his car to the track on a 2-ton farm truck and had to unload across the fair grounds were the tractor pullers unloaded.
