ump dirtcar round up@ I55

well you are right, insecure isnt quite the right word to use. I have talked to my parents a lot about this subject, and it comes down to what you want out of racing. Some people are happy going to the same place every week and racing with just that group. Some people like being the big fish in the small pond. I like racing around here, but I like going other places and meeting new people. I figure you only are on the track maybe 20 to 30 minutes a night racing, the rest of the time you are socializing. I can go to race in kentucky, indiana, farmer city, fairbury, oklahoma etc and have people that know me and help me out, etc.

As far the round-up, the point i am trying to make is this isnt supposed to be an allied race, i think a stub car from shepps or indiana or michigan or new york should have much as an opportunity to race as it as any pevely car, without having to do radical things to their car. the only thing a pevely car should have an advantage of is not having to travel and knowing the race track.

as far as the clutch / transmission rules, i think the triple disk rule allied came up with is silly. This may be subject to a different post, but going to a triple disk is real silly. for a clutch flex plate, and throw out bearing it cost me close to $700, and i had to sell some of my old stuff for 50 cents on the dollar. If something happens, good luck selling your 3 disk and you cant run it in a mod either competitively. you can buy a bert for around 800 and a brinn for 900-1000, and have a lot better part. I know people say they wouldnt use a used bert or brinn, but i bet they dont have a brand new 3 speed so what is the difference? Before you throw another fit, i just want to say i wish they would have not changed the rule at all, and i have no idea why they did. I just think it would have made more sense to go from a stock clutch to a brinn.

I already stated what i think about carbs, i dont have a problem with 2 barrel carbs, but you CAN get a decent 4 barrel for the same price as a good 2 barrel, and again, if you want to move up you have something you can use.

As far as engine rules, like i said, I have 2 real good allied motors now, by that i mean 4340 cranks, h-beam rods, good lightweight pistons, etc and i only have about $1000 more invest in my 414 engine, and that is because i bought a dart SHP block. and the 414 makes atleast 100 more horsepower. The more restricted the rules are, the more stuff costs. And the more cheating goes on. Look at the crate class as an example. I dont have a problem with spec engines if they are going to be checked. i won 12 features and had 6 2nds in about 23 nights at belleville and got my engine checked once or twice. I would bet there are people cheating at pevely, like with light cranks or 50cc heads, and they aren't getting checked. 50cc heads are ILLEGAL according to the compression rule, incase you didnt know, unless you have dish pistons or a .100 thick head gasket. FYI a regular head gasket is .040. If you have a 50cc head with .005 deck height and a .040 head gasket you are about 12.48 to 1.

and lastly, before i get back to the garage, i would love to get another modified again, but have nowhere near the money to do that. when i ran a mod a few years ago i did pretty decent with a old swingarm lightning and i ran my sportsman engine most of the year, but i also ran mid-pack and usually averaged about $100 a night in winnings. that was 3 years ago too. 600 to 650 horse engines were big back then, now guys are 700 plus, that is why a few guys that were fast then have not been as good. korte pretty much whooped guys when he raced a mod this year with a 792 horse engine, i cant afford that. and i dont want to sound too arrogant but i am beyond the point of my racing life that i just like driving around in circles, i want to be competitive. If you want to travel some with a sportsman, good luck going to oklahoma, indiana, clarksville, or that race coming up in peoria with a 400 horse allied engine, a 3 speed and a 2 barrel and running well. I dont see that happening.

sportsman is a support class, but isnt an entry level class anymore. hornets and pure stocks are an entry level class. and i am not knocking those classes.

How true Pitdrifter. Why dose everyone say they are JUST a support class? We race karts and no they are not as flashy as a latemodel or Mod. but I think we race just as hard as the big guys. We don't look down on our level of racing and say we are just karts. We are proud to race karts. What I'm getting at is the sportsman class in my opion is just as high class as anyother class and most of the time has better racing and it would like you say be realy cool to see them all have the same rules so they can travel (if they so desire and can afford it) and visit other tracks. It just might help all tracks. See when you can only run one or two tracks because of the rules you get what you ask for. "Favortisum" See our rules in every class are nation wide, so if I want to load up and race Ohio, Fla.,New York or any other state at any given weekend or just stay home I have no worries other then the cash to travel.
Think about it, if all the classes has the same rules for there class just think what the car count might be at the round up.

Kent, I am in no way disrespecting the sportsman or any class of racing. But, sportsman, street stocks, pure stocks, 4 cyls, aren't a headliner class at any track I've ever been to. For the most part it's Late models, mods, sprints, ect... That's why they get labeled support classes. Usually the support classes bring in more competitors who pay their money(same as the top class), race for less and that helps tracks to pay the top classes. Yes they spend good money and work just as hard as anyone on their cars or kart. I don't like the "JUST" word either. I certainly don't look down on the support classes, shoot, I race a pure stock.... :D We need all the classes we have. We need them so guys/gals have a place to race that suits them. Weather it be financially or experience wise.

Ya I'm not knocking your post just trying to get a thought out that if everyone was on the same page with rules in each class MAYBE and JUST MAYBE the races at every track would be more completive with drivers coming and going from track to track and not the same bunch of drivers everyweekend. I know it will not happen but it's a nice thought anyway. Another reason I like our form of racing. Most of the time we are beat by seat time not some stupid rule favoring the local boy.

The guys building the cars know the rules when they build them. Quit building them so light then you won't have so much lead hung on them.

I log on here to see a thread about a race, only to see that discussion turn into a political rant. If I didn't know better, I'd think this was 4m.net LOL

Getting back on topic, given that they're running eight classes, I still think Allied should consider some sort of time limit for the races (and all the more so should this turn out to be one of those 45-50 degree "Carhart" races.) Even if they don't want to impose a time limit, perhaps place a limit on the number of yellows allowed (not including cautions for jumped starts or debris) before going to a "green-white-checker" finish. You hate to have to do this, but no one wants to sit thru several 20 minute heat and B-main races if it's freezing cold.
Got to agree.. I went one night 2 years ago, and it was yellow poke along.... yellow, race... yellow.. intermission... you get my drift..It was freakin cold... I left and didnt come back another night. Had the show moved along with say a time limit.... We all 5 of us would have returned every night. But you can only enjoy the first hour or so of racing with your teeth chattering...

Spoken like a true race fan Hound. I got to say some time you suprise me.:D
3 things anyone going to the races in Mo. or IL. shoud know if they are a real race fan.
1) Always dress for winter
2) Always expect it to rain of flood
and last but not least
3) Always expect 5 cautions per race.

Dress warm for the Round Up folks

The more restricted the rules are, the more stuff costs. And the more cheating goes on.

I do not agree. What classes have the most open rules? Late Models and Modifieds. What classes are too expensive for guys like us to run? Late Models and Modifieds? If we make the proposed changes to the Sportsman class (brinns, 400 motor, quick changes, 4 bbl, etc) our cars will just be heavy late models or mod's with a stock frame. My point is its a slippery slope.

I don't think restricted rules allow more cheating. I believe not teching, not enforcing rules and weak fines/suspension allow cheating.

However, i do agree with you on the idea that going to a bert/brinn would have been a smarter choice than going to a restricted triple disc (guys with 5 1/2" that were legal before got screwed). But I don't think they should have gone either way.

This might be the first thread where a large number of people debated something without name calling and turning into a bunch of political bs. So thanks to all for atleast voicing your opinions even if others don't agree.
