Lake Hill Speedway?

My uncle would definately attend a reunion at the track.

Lake Hill

Marty Heutel,s mother owned the track. The promoter at the time was Marshall Youst.I at the time was the treasurer and secretary of Gateway Racing Association. When the track closed down the association went to promote races at St.Charles Speedway.

Over at Lake Hill Jerry Sifford in his bright yellow no.70 Mustang .I always thought Russ Wallace was the only driver to beat Sifford but he could not do it.
Bill Myers,C.C.Corbin,Fred Tiede,Rusty Wallace,Larry Phillips,Bucky Beasley just to name a few drivers that raced there every Sunday night.

I remember a garage that was close to Lake Hill had a number of race cars in it,s shop. You would hear a car come into the pit gate and it would Bill Schrader. The car was a chevelle and the no. on it was 100.At that time it was called a street stock. The driver was Kenny Schrader.

Yes ,i remember Lake Hill very well.I still miss it.

Is Bucky Beasley still around? He was my favorite when I was a kid. Drove up at the old Elsberry track too.

How bout we start a list of names who raced there?

Heres a few that I remember

Don Helitag
Harold and Bill Workman (Harold drove an orange #11)
Len Getimier #63
Bob Miner #94 Dodge (I think I remember him and Phillips fighting in turn 2 on night)
David Goldsberry #7 CocaCola Chevy
Bill Laycock #82
Mike Barbeau #81

Anyone else? If we get this thing started I'll keep an updated alphabetized list. Try to include car #'s

dont forget my dad. he raced there in the mid 70's. Larry Jones #31. not sure what class he ran. I talked to him the other day, and he said he has a few memories of racing there.

NASCAR at LAKEHILL

.Don't forget the visit to LAKEHILL by the GRAND TOURING divison .of NASCAR with TINY LUND and others. How about the THRILL SHOWS by JOIE CHITWOOD andsponsored by the local DODGE DEALERS ? I remeber at least one SPRINT CAR show on the asphalt. The best weekly .show was the SUNDAY night .ALLIED show. EBY. WORKMAN, SHRUM. THe 1/5 mile dirst was better .than the asphalt ever was.

Your are more than welcome to fish out the race track. I need to get the fish out before I drain it. But I'm hesitant to have you come by in its current state. It is just such a mess. Give me a few more weeks and then send me a note.

If anyone wants to catch me at the site to fish or look around, you can call or e-mail me at:

keg99@softhome.net (but please, if you e-mail me, put "Lakehill" in the subject line. I get so much Spam that I might just delete your message and not even know it.)

I will venture to guess you gonna get a LOT of offers to help with the fishing. LOL ;):D

Thanks for posting this information on Lake Hill Speedway for all us STL racing fans.

Lake Hill Speedway

My mom told me one time that some professional wrestling matches were held in the infield at the track. The infamous mosquitos put a quick end to that. We did have "The Ott Swenson Thrill Show and Circus" too .Even an elephant made a few laps around the track. We had the Tornament of Thrills many times . Buzz Bundy drove around the track on two wheels just like he did between the buildings in the James Bond film. We had a few sprint races promoted by Joe Shaheen. Chuck Amati won at least a couple of times. Had my mom's health not delined so fast it may have made it back to dirt. Lending institutions tend to frown on older borrowers in poor health. But the truth is, there was alot of GOOD RACING there and so many wonderful drivers, fans, and friends that came thru that tunnel.........the track may be gone but the memory will las a lifetime.

Klein and Lake Hill

I couldn't find any pics of the old coupe at Lake Hill Speedway (although I know have some), but I did find a pic of the Mercury Capri that Don Klein ran there.

By the looks of the fence in the background... the place was already falling apart. LOL!

Jerry Sifford is my Crew Chief and he has told me tons of stories about Lake Hill. If this happens I will make sure we make it down to see the place.

Coupe Pic

I found a pic of Klein's coupe (this is the one currently being restored), but it was waaay to big for my flatbed scanner... so I had to scan it twice and then splice the pics together.

Don't look at it too closely... and you can hardly tell... I just didn't feel like taking a ton of time to do it.

The pic is faded a bit since it was in the showroom of the dealership for many many years.

I have one of Gervase Basler's coupe somewhere as well... still digging.

I encourage as many people as possible to post pics of the old cars...

Now there's a name I havent heard mentioned in years. I wonder how Garvas and Juanita are doing these days. I never thought to think that Garvas had raced there.

Indy Fan

I have just received a phone call from a "Cup" driver that is interested in a one day reunion. Call me at 314-223-2904, and we call get the ball rolling.
I'm the new owner of the Lakehill Speedway and have been interested in its history. Atthough I remember "Be There!" when KXOK advertised race night, I never had the opportunity to attend.

Anyway, I was wondering if there is any interest in having a reunion-type event out there. While the place is completely run-down, there may be a lot of you who would like to have one last look and maybe one last lap.

We are planning to redevelop the site sometime next year and are just now starting to clear out the brush. Over the years a lot of junk has accumulated and I am trying to get it all removed. The old concession stands have almost completely fallen in and will eventually be torn down for safety reasons and then the race track will be removed for good. I just regret tearing up so many memories, but alas, that is the way it goes.

The track, as many of you know, is filled with water. I hope to have it pumped out sometime this summer. And the track surface is filled with trees and bushes. I will try to remove them without tearing up the track too much.

I am thinking about a one-day open house sometime next September or October. I am not really prepared for a lot of people, but would like to let those who are interested have a chance to stop by.

Please respond with any thoughts or ideas. I look forward to hearing from you.

I left a message for Don. It looks like we're taking things to the next step. But first I want to mention two things. First, I would like to assemble a group of personal stories about the speedway - just like what you have been putting together so far. I'll start a new thread to get that going.

And second - fishing. I plan to drain the speedway pretty soon
(as soon as I can figure out how:confused:)
but I first need to get the fish out. And since several of you have asked about fishing in the track, I think it would be a lot of fun to set up a day (or two) to come out and fish. So, before we start pumping, I'll open up the site for anyone who would like to come out and cast into the old pit area:eek:.

How's June 23rd and 24th sound? Just remember, the track has fish (some are pretty big) but I don't guarantee any luck in catching them!

THE LAST RACE,,it might already be mentioned here but the last race was put on by a man named Jessy Tettiton it was a special show to honer Rusty Wallace..there were about 15 late models, the second to last car to cross under the checkered flag was Mike
Null,,the very last racer to ever cross under the checkered flag at lake hill was yours truly..i even had the pleasure of winning a heat race in my 57 chevy when allied ran it,i also ran a open wheeled car in i belive 69 for a special show, but then my open wheel experience is another story in its self

ONE MORE TIDBIT;;;name the 3 drivers currently racing that raced at the track when it was DIRT

Will we need a fishing licience for Missouri (since I live in Illinois) for private land? Sounds like fun.

Does anybody know what the symbols on Don's door stand for? If not, I will ask him tonight.

Mike
