32 Deuce,
The first inverted wing on the sprint was put on Al's car with the help of Roy Hall and my father Ken Luebbert and the guy's at the shop. I guess they should have put a patent on it.
I use to paint George Eagans silver crown cars in the early 90's and it was great to hear the stories that George, Gus Soan, Hubert Eves, Bob Hemple, Pat King and Elmer Norath would all talk about.
I wish that I had a chance to talk to Wib Spalding on Saterday, But as it turned out it was better just sittin back and listening to what was being said...

Still a very moving day for all.. Thanks, Tom Luebbert

The guy was wrong

I had a question that day that nobody had an answer for & I haven't seen it yet on this thread. Does anybody know why the track closed when it did in 1980? I guessed maybe the usual reasons, development, noise, insurance costs. One guy told me a driver was killed at the track a year before & maybe a lawsuit was pending?

Anyway, I can't remember having a better time at a motorsports event when there was no race. I took a hundred pictures, here are a couple:

No driver was killed at Lake Hill Speedway. We did not sell the racetrack because we couldn't pay the electric bill......these are just storys. Some people just enjoy making it up as they go along because they enjoy the attention and hearing themselves talk. Why the track closed after the 1980 season is another question. I can only speak for when the Heutel family owned it- 1948-February 1980.

As is well known by now I was at the "LAST RACE"as a matter of fact I ran the last lap in compition at the track, that also should be a well known fact, abit doubious but still a fact.I knew the man that put on the last race,Jessie Tettiton(sp?),I was also friends with his son Tommy who did some racing locally later on..I had a talk with him after the race and asked him what the plans were for the next year (1981)He was fairly canded with his answer (as best I can recall)"being a race promoter aint all that its cracked up to be,lots of time spent getting the track ready to run, many dollars spent on addvertising, track help, insurance etc...And more often than not loosing money in the end.I just dont feel up to the task any more,if some one else wants to promote the track so be it"..If ya knew Jessie he was a big man and I remember him sitting in the office handing out our pay and yes he paid us quite well that day even with less than a full house in the stands,I could tell that there was a bit of sadness in his voice..As far as the reason lakehill never re-opened,my best guess is lack of a promoter with the KAHOONAS to step up to the plate and make it hapen in 81..(I found out exactly why he felt the way he did ,as years later I put on the promoters hat at Greenville for a streetstock show that was a artistic sucess but a financial floop) lenny garson

Thanks Lenny, that seems to sum it all up. If it was difficult then, it seems like it would be a monumental task now in the computerized age with so many other things people can do for recreation. Sometimes I wonder if Schrader & Marler even make any profit at all on a regular race night at I-55. The stands are definitely not full most times.

What kind of Karts were those at the Lake Hill reunion ?

At the Lake Hill reunion, there were several go karts that looked a little like quarter midgets, but not quite. Dose anyone know what kind of karts these were ? And the name of the club or organization they are with? And where and when do they race ? And any other info anyone may have.

Thanks Rick

Hello Rick, The go carts you saw were owned by a gentelman and two of my uncles. Dont know if you are familiar with a go cart track that used to be down the street from Lake Hill called Mini Indy about 10 years ago. There is no club or organization. Just a few people that bought the go carts when Mini Indy closed. They do not race at a track unless you count the personal track the one gentleman paved around his garage with working corner lights, pill draw, and all the other neat things. Very cool to watch as only a small group of friend race the carts. They get pretty serious from the stories ive heard. Hope this clears up your question.

Thanks Jeremy, So that explains why I can't find any info on them.

There will be adult karts very much like those at Doe Run Raceway this year. We're waiting on rules meetings right now...

Last I talked to KEG it was still up in the air. The way I see it we all need to pray to the man upstaires. Hopefully the RACING GODS and KEG and Valley Park can work something out. I put my vote in to the Racing Gods.

Easter Swap Meet

Maybe we could have the huge Easter swap meet and auto show at the track to show that there are many ways that money could be made at that grand old track.

I hope that there will be a spring event of some kind.

RWL in Collinsville
