Getting back to the original subject...

Last year, the UMP LM national champ won $100,000. So did the modified champ, if I'm not mistaken. However, that was the first time the payoff has been anywhere close to that size. In previous years, I believe the Late Model champ only received around $12,000. Not sure what the payout will be this year.

By comparison, Tom Seets won the NASCAR Heartland Region and will win somewhere in the neighborhood of $44,000 for 18 nights worth of racing. If he were to be lucky enough to win the national championship, his total haul would be somewhere around $170,000. The ShorTrack national champion (basically a class for sportsman and b-mod type cars) will get around $10,000, which is almost as much as the UMP Late Model champ had become used to getting. Makes ya say hmmmm......

Well my personal opion is that RODNEY MELVIN needs to thankthe inventors of that special device called traction control.
For example the night at highland he could only get to schraders rear quater panel then the big caution come out around 15 20 to go rodneys dad used the cell phone activated the T.C. DEVICE and away he went to over a straightaway and almost half of another win over schrader so u tell me and also what happened to him at brownstown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Your not cheating till u are caught but cheaters arent good race car drivers!!!!!!!!!!

And lastly if u want to root for the best all around non cheating driver out there now You need to rott for the

"REAL DEAL DON O'NEAL"

Everytime that I've seen Mt Melvin run outside of Mt Vernon he's been nothing but impressive...I'm not a big Melvin fan however the man can drive a race car....

DIXON AND MELVIN

My hubby has had the honor of running behind and being passed by both Dixon and Melvin. The only thing he has to say is that they are both great drivers in their own way. He raced ARCA with Dixon and this was the description of his driving "Dixon has more you know whats than any driver he has ever seen. Dixon would stay on the gas longer and go farther into the turn than any other driver". His description of Melvin and he has followed Melvin in several different cars. "He just smooth, the same consistant job every time, no matter what car, no matter what track." This is coming from someone who has been out there with both of them. If you have raced with them, you will have nothing but complete respect for both of them.

I would rather EAT DIRT......than race Nascar weekly....UMP or bust......apparently quite a few others feel the same way....like car counts.....makes ya go HHHHmmmmm....

Mt. Melvin is another name for mt. vernon or more specificly mt vernon speedway, not rodney himself

Are You all blind Melvin did a complete spin out in front Drake and Drake got penalized for it.

As for Dixon being a moron or no good look at all the no finishes he had and still has second in the nation and got I-55 and Godfery track chamipon.

To answer the origanal question I belive ( don't write it stone) its $10,000 to the champ

J/M/O Danny

To me the I-55 championchip is more demanding than the UMP National championchip. Dixon could've ran at MCS and won it easily. In 2001 the National Points boiled down to had it the easiest and its doing it again. In 2001 Melvin only had one super tough racetrack a week. He had to run against Gundaker (who took him to the wire there) every week and Godfrey. Dixon spent his year running between there and Belleville (Mark Faust, Burwell, Frankie Martin, etc) and at I-55. I am a firm believer that in 2001 if the top 4 in National points would've been seperated it would've went down 1.Gundaker 2.Dixon 3.Melvin 4.M. Faust. Melvin came out on top because he got to seperate from the others on Saturday. Gundaker had a heck of year having to run against Melvin one night and Dixon the next (not to mention Oller and Rat..). Dixon did a pretty good job there himself. This year I can't say how it would've went down, but I'd say that Dixon would be much closer than he was. That is my overpriced $.02.

A very intelligent analysis. Its that kind of insight that kind of puts a lot this into perspective, I think the point about winning the I-55 championship versus the UMP championship was exceptionally good, its pretty obvious that to win the UMP title you dont necessarily have to actually beat any quality competition on a regular basis. So which title says more about how good you really are? I would put the I-55 title ahead of the UMP one for prestige/credibility any day. You have to perform every week there to get that one, and thats a tough field to beat.

For one how many of I55's drivers go to other tracks, or big shows and win? How many can win at Mt.Melvin? I55 is Dixons home track and has been for years, and he still races it and still wins championships. Mt.Vernon is Melvins home track, he has raced it for years, and in the last few years, just started winning. as far as competition, Burwell, Billy faust, raced there alot this year. also F Martin, Morris, english and several others have came and ran. so the competiton has been there. Besides how many tracks has Rodney raced at and won this year? at last count I believe it was 12. just cause he has trouble at pevely doesnt make Dixon a better driver. Cause for your info dixon cant drive worth a crap at Mt.vernon. everybody tends to run your home track good, thats what your use too. why is that so hard for some to figure out?

Congrads to the 2003 UMP champ!
and congrats to Dixon for another goodd season.

Sounded good til you forgot that word. Every week at I55 is tough. Cant say that at Mt Melvin, though, can you?

I have been to alot of tracks this year in 5 states, you people from I-55 need to get out of town if you think that it is the best and most competitive track year round. By the way Rodney doesnt care about any of your opinions, he knows that he has the respect of Dixon and all the other I55 drivers.

 see u at the track

Yeah, I also know people who are into hanging by meat hooks placed in the skin of their backs. Not for me, but it works for them...

Nobody is saying I55 is the toughest weekly track year round. But its a dam sight more competitive than Rodneys home track.

Lets take a look at the standings. At I55, Ed won by a scant 12 points over Ratajczyk, the top five were covered by 200 points, the top ten by 440. Take a look down the top five and there are some serious names there, not just Ed Dixon and thats it.

1 Ed Dixon 1022
2 Tim Ratajczyk 1010
3 Mark Oller 993
4 Kevin Gundaker 900
5 Brian Wolfmeier 822

By comparison, Rod's nearest competitor as of Aug 30, the last results available, (and funnily enough, it's another Melvin) is 465 points behind, and the guy in third has less than half Rodney's points tally. The top five is basically a joke. I mean, no offense to those guys who are racing there, but they just arent even in the game, it's more like Rod shows up for work, punches the clock, gets his paycheck and goes home every week, and let them other guys fight it out for second on back.

1 27 Melvin, Rodney 1325
2 27B Melvin, Bobby 860
3 84 Boyles, Tony 656
4 E55 Loddekke, Brad 591
5 44B Burwell, Jimmy 537

Doesnt look like there is much competition at Mt Melvin now, does it? I mean, I really dont think that Rod is that good, now do you? So good that if he went to I55 every week the result would be the same, meaning he would outscore the guy in third by 2 to 1? I mean, your saying that I55 is Ed's back yard, and well, even he cant kill em all week in and week out, so thats gotta tell ya something about the situation at Mt Melvin, dont ya think?

T.Nie, you are a complete idiot. These five drivers that you have listed, when you take dixon and gundaker out, who would know these other guys?I am a fan of Dixons, Gundakers, and Melvin, what do you think Melvin won the championship by running only 1 night at Mt. Vernon? Not possible, you have to have 2 good finishes a week to win. Melvin has feature wins at 12 different tracks this year,. He ran 18 of the COC races, and is 2nd place, less than 50 points behind Weaver. You know what not a single one of those races that he recieved points for was at Mt. Vernon. Almost everyone of these races, he finished in the top 5. Finishing in the top 5 is the name of the game for any championship. You talk about Ed, yeah he is a good driver, if you look at the results between rodney & Ed, at other tracks other than i-55 or MVN, you will see that Melvin came out on top. Melvin & Dixon were both at Benton, Mo for the big show,Melvin blew dixon away. Melvin & Dixon both at Montgomery co, Melvin blew dixon away there. Look at Nat. points standing, i think Melvin is 483 ahead of dixon, thats about the point spread between the closest driver at MVN. If i remember right English came to MVN for 2 features, Melvin blew English away both features. Then according to u, thats cause rick cheated for him. Let me tell you something about rick heck, hes not a cheater, he is a guy who will do anything for ya, if ya need it. If you don't believe me , ask Jimmy burwell.I know for a fact, that he has helped J. Burwell all yr long.He has give Jimmy tires to race on all year long, for nothing.Right now his Trans is in Jimmys car, so that he can race, because he is on a low budget. If it wasn't for rick heck, there would be no racing in MVN, it would be a closed dilaplidated track. Not all the people in MVN think the way u do.He was overlmenely elected to city Council. If he is the kind of person u say he is i don't think he would have been elected, he is a vet of the 101 airborne division of the US Army, he defened our country , have u? He sits on the Habitat for Humanity board, to help the unfortunate people, so they may have somewhere to live. And most of all he is a father of 6 boys, and gets on here and reads the trash that you write about him.U should know the facts before u say trash about some one. God Bless You.

Thanks, not very often do i get a complimant, Rodney & Ed have both done good this year. Ed just has had some bad luck this year. i'm not a bit ashamed, congratulations, Rodney on a great year. Congratulations on a 2nd UMP national title, Congratulations Ed on a 2nd place finish. I think anyone who drives a Lm is worth watching. Thank you, Rick Heck

but mustang lookat the top five at my vernonthey are not certainly house hold names either maybe they should have h a match race between the two top fives
