Before We Begin Again In 08:

spec tires

i have ran hards and softs-no diffrence to me-i now run med compound because of the wear factor-a spec tire will not have a impact in our low horsepower racing-harder tires will just make more wrecks-just like vaccuum rules-it was tried down here and only made my car faster-now mods or late models yes tires are a factor

you know first of all to Tony Moore that car that won was a 2300

i think it was uncle ed that nailed it when he said "wizard of oz with an oil pan" by the way the carb says 500 CFM on the side of it and we put pump gas in it before the race so i don't see how it wasn't legal other then mel wanted the money to stay local

i remember tony comming over to us and telling us he was gonna run his stroker motor (which would have been interesting to see how close he would have been) but he blew it up the week before

oh ya next time someone talks to tony ask him how that fuel pump that he "borrowed" is working out for him

and as far as uncle ed is concerned it just seems to me that he is pissed that he is spending so much money and none of his cars finished the feature the night of the big money race maybe if he would do a little better research he would build a better and cheaper car

while i am on here someone needs to ask the guy who cryed his way into the victory how it feels to be by a "hobby stock" cause he said the 6m car was a hobby stock his was a true "mini stock"

maybe some of you should come down to our track and run with some of the other "hobby stocks" oh ya only one of your cars would be leagal and it is the 14 car

OK It's my turn.

Hi Guys.

First let me say thanks for coming all that way to compete in the HEIDENHAIN 10K.
It was our first attempt at promoting the Mini Stock Class for big pay outs.
Our sponsors intend to do even more this coming year!
As most of you already know Mel will always have the final say so.
(We have beat that to death already)
I was indeed disappointed that our sponsor came all the way from Chicago to be present for the event that we did not have even one car finish the feature.
I think any one would have been.
Pissed would not be the correct term.
That would be unprofessional of me to adopt that type of attitude.
I had a great time watching the field compete and I thought it was some of the best racing in our class all year.
Just having all those cars out on the track was sure a sight to see.
We will do what we can to promote this class so have weekly car counts that rival that event until we have another big event in which I would hope to have even bigger car counts.

As I told both of you when this happened:
I was not privileged to the conversation between Mel and you guys so I can't be sure who said what.
I only know that Scott told be that indeed the carb was bigger than 500 CFM.
If the block were stamped 2300cc, does that insure it is just that 2300?
NO:
We must check these things and I can only assume that at least Scott knew that his carb was too big.
Weather he told Mel it's size or not I can't say for sure.
I can only apologize for all of your troubles as I am truly sorry this happened for what ever reason.
When you look at the struggles the local dirt tracks around the country are having attracting fans into the seats and paying out something that the competitors think is worth competing for I am not sure it is worth it in the long run.
I look at it as a bad investment if it has that many hassles and little return on investment.
So I understand why the promoters take care of the locals.
Scott (6M) did not have the greatest handle on the track.
He was in the right place at the right time.
After the race he explained to me that if he had some time to tune his car for this track he could have had a better run.

WHAT BETTER RUN;
I thought he had a great run for his first time at our home track.
He was 3rd or 4th when Jim spun and he lucked into the spot.
I don't know if he would have been able to pass the other cars before the race ended, no one does.

After the dust has settled for these past few months we have been looking at the rules for MCS as you all know.
We think at this point we will see not changes in the rules package for 08.
As for me having to build cheaper cars.
I would bet my cars are some on the lease expensive cars out there when it comes to performance parts.
They do look nice every week and we do spend some of our budget on the appearance of the team as required by the sponsor, but we know how to keep the sponsor happy so we can continue have the privilege of racing every week with their help.
We did not expect to go out and out spend every one just to win.
This is a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
And the engines were built to the old RAMS rules so we are to the most powerful cars in the field.
And by the way the 15A won his heat that night so we did have something to brag about to the sponsors.
We started on the outside front row.
All in all I was proud of how we did and all 3 of my team started the feature thanks to Kurt and Lane loaning us the water pump.
I have not forgotten that I still owe you for that Kurt!

I would like to thank everyone again who signed the poster that Johns son made.
That will go a long way to helping us to secure another event in 08

SO:

If there is a lesson to be learned here then take it for what it is worth.
I know that if you travel to other tracks to compete with the locals who keep the track in operation weekly, you must disclose everything completely and accurately to make sure there is no way to disqualify you if you do happen to luck into a win.
The other thing I would tell my drivers is that you may want to lay back just a little and not try to show up the locals until you have won their respect.
Travel there a few times before you take it to them.
A second or third place finish would have at least paid the tow and entry fees instead of going home with nothing.
This is a HIGH TENSION SPORT!
Lots of emotion out on the track and right after the race so respect is the best tool you can use weather traveling to other tracks or competing at your home track.
Respect for your fellow racers is a must to insure that you go home without a lump on your head or get taken out the next time you are there.
I can only speak for myself when I say that I would be thrilled to have both of you back anytime to race with us.
You both drove respectfully and were great to talk to after the races.
I am sorry you both had a bad experience at MCS, but this is not the norm for everyone who comes to that track.
We try to make everyone feel welcome there.
Don't let this discourage you from trying again.
As for coming to NEVADA, I would love to come down there to race at least once, I have no problem with that, but you both told me they race for little or no pay out.
I can't afford to take that rig all that way and have no chance to at least pay something back into the kitty.
Maybe if you get with the promoter and put together a special event which will highlight the Minis and get the rules set in stone I would try to get some of us to come and support the event.
Please note:
If the rules are much different than our weekly rules the possible candidates will be less.
This is the economy class and not all of us have the budget for engines tailored to different tracks.
We simply race what we have and try to luck into the winners circle.
None of us make our living racing Mini Stock!
Please stay in touch with us and let us know what your plans are for 08.
If your home track is still running mini stock let us know, I have customers down in that area so I may be able to visit some time.

See you next time:

Uncle Ed,

Uncle Ed "A Class"

I've been following this thread from the start. Not for me but because of the friends I have in this class that it would affect. I regret not being able to make it down to the Heidehain pits to say THANKS. Pulling double duty the last two weeks of the season had me running around like a chicken with my head cut off. However throughout this thread and the manner in which Uncle Ed conducts himself at the track I will give him a public salute. With the backing they got it appears that the Heidhain crew could have all the performance advantages they want. Yet Uncle Ed continues to try and keep costs down and cars competitive in an ubiased manner. Every class would be pretty lucky to have someone this concerened about them. Uncle Ed thank you and please thank your sponsor from us. The Heidehain 10K was a great night of racing and a glimpse of what could happen if you can align the right people with our sport.
Thanks,
Ken Huber
Huber Motorsports

Thanks:

OK OK OK!
Now I am blushing!
Maybe I am just trying to be fair with everyone, but that is the way I was raised.
We are very lucky to have a great sponsor in a class where the sponsors are few.
After all, who wants to sponsor the least watched class when exposure is what sponsorship is based on.
I think you are right Ken when you said that I am trying to keep the cost down for everyone.
Seeing the few cars that are capable of running away with the show week in and week out is not what I wanted to see even if it were my cars.
The possibility of building stronger cars with better equipment is just a matter of money coupled with the guidance of those who know how and where to spend the money.
I don't have the back ground in dirt track racing or the time to learn it the hard way.
I have asked the question of HOW do I do this and WHAT will I need of many of the seasoned Mini Stock racers and I am still learning.
Thats what drew me into this in the first place.
Everyone is willing to help each other out.
If the competition was closer between everyone this might disappear, but this is what I think needs to happen in order to advance the agenda of the class as a whole.
As long as everyone is willing and wants to spend a few more bucks to step up the class and make it faster, I will be right there doing the same thing.
I LIKE TO GO FAST!
I was simply trying to make it more affordable to try and draw more new competitors into the class.
If everyone is happy racing the same people each week, I am OK with that.
At least you know who to look out for and who will race you clean.
There is nothing wrong with that!
We will just have to except the fact that the car count will not support a bigger payout each week and what ever we race for is still better than just a trophy.

Besides:

We will still have the big money race after the end of the points chase.

Right now I am mired in mail order catalogs trying to see what things will help put us in the winners circle more often.
Man this stuff is expensive!
And I must buy three of each of them!
Can't give any one of the drivers an advantage over the other.
That will cause mutiny! lol.

This will be our third year as a team and I think it is about time we learned how to win just a little more often.

I can't wait until next season.

Thanks again for the kind words, It does mean allot to me that some of you agree with my opinion's me being a new comer to the sport.

See you all soon:
HAPPY THANKS GIVING EVERYONE.

Uncle Ed.

Uncle Ed

Uncle Ed keep keep the post coming I enjoy them an agree with most of your thoughts on our class. Don"t feel bad about being new to this comparied to me an my son you are a veteran. we were lucky to buy a car that could run with most with a good driver an the right set up an all I did to the car all year was put a starter . spark plugs. an plug wires , a 500 CFM carb. with a 2in, adperplate an change oil after two nights of racing. also had some front end problems an rear schackle brackits. an I think this was the 3rd year on the motor but would have to ask Rob Denny about that. Now about 08 I am scratching my head about that . anyway glad to here the poster was well received by the Heidenhain CORP. so keep you thoughs coming .

I think I missed my true calling!

Thanks for the vote of confidence you guys:
It has been my goal to help all along.
I never wanted to hurt this class just protect it for the folks who would escalate it to being something that the new comer can't afford to try out.
If the cost of poker is too high, you just look for a cheaper game.
You don't feel any less compelled to play, you just need to find a game that you can play for awhile and have some fun without breaking the bank.
Being in the game is what is important.
At what ever level you can just to see if you are any good or if you like it at all.
After all, you know what they say:"Try it, You might like it"
Well if you can't even afford to try it how can you tell if you will like it at all?
That has been the premise all along.
BUT:
If the general consensus is to build faster cars to enhance the show,
then I guess we must oblige the fans.
Mel has said that this is why he changed the rules in the first place.
I don't have to ask the drivers and other car owners this question.
I already know the answer:
We all want to go faster and we all like to tinker with the rules and see if we can gain an edge somewhere.
It is a defective gene in our DNA.
The Need For Speed.
For me it was handed down by both my parents.
The both raced.
I have a double dose of the gene.
I just thought it was the majority of the competitors that wanted to keep the cost to a minimum so we all didn't spend each other out of the class.
Maybe I was wrong (Go figure) and most of us just won't come out and say it.
Well let be be the first:
If this rules package we have at MCS is more in line with what the fans want to see.
I will be the first to get out my check book.
Well:
Not the first.
Some have already done that.
The days of scrounging around for old parts to build an engine are gone my friends.
It will look like F16 tactical fighter planes under the hoods in 08.
Lets see if we (that is all of us) can change the laws of physics and push a 2500 pound vehicle to Mach 1 with a stronger rubber band then we have ever seen in this class.
Lets see just how far we can push the envelope.
REMEMBER:
With added speed also come the need for better safety devices.
I think we should adopt the HANS DEVICE in the Mini Stock class.
I think I will take the cars over the the NHRA inspector to have the cage ultra sound tested and certified.
All I would ask of Mel is to put up a catch fence so we don't see the same thing we saw last year.
The thought of cars plunging through the pits is just not something I want to see.

Now that you are laughing hysterically::D
Get back to work on those ballistic missiles we call Mini Stocks!

Have a great Holiday Season everyone:

Uncle Ed.

uncle ed

just wanted to say thks for a great year we really enjoyed seeing you guys back i never got a chance to get down there to say hello an ty not sure if ashley did or not.it was a great year for everyone i think.alot of new an young drivers .like to see thathope we have more next year also we talked it over an had a few offers to help ashley move up but decided she staying with rams till she 18 at least so tell tony lady dozer will be there next year in new pulets hope she has as a good as year as she did this year never tore much up an never ran over tony lol see u guys next year an happy holidays from lady dozer racing

You weren't wrong Uncle ED, most of the competitors want to keep the costs down. Only a few want to open things up, actually only one besides those mysterious voices in Jim's head. I don't know how many fans Mel talked to so he could conclude that they want the ministocks to run faster instead of have closer competition but I bet it was the ones that spent more time in the beer line than in the stands or relatives of the few that want to go faster. By the way there is a hot 2.3 on ebay right now for $2500.

Fans:

I again guys:
In regards to what you have said about the fans:

Remember the fans in the beer line still help bring up our pay outs!
If the show has a least important time other than intermission, it would be us.
None the less, those fans may or may not have had a say so.
Regardless of the chatter, it is our job to put forth the best show we can under the rules we have for MCS.

Please never forget the fans.

Thanks Tom for the kudos and you are welcome in my pit area anytime.

Ed.

I still think most fans would like to see a closer race than a few faster cars. That is what they are there to see. If you know who is going to win before the flag drops why watch the race? My point is I don't think that decision was made because of the fans.

Re: Fans

I know your heart is in the right place Jack:
I think most of us have the same view, but we are at the mercy of the venue we compete at.
Don't think for one minuet that I don't see the fans run for the concession stand when we come out or after the other classes are finished.
We need to come up with some solid ideas to give the fans a reason to watch us and not leave their seats.
If this requires Mel to adjust the running order then we should support that.
But in the end, it is up to all of us.
The owners of the track, the competitors and the fans.
Neither will survive if all the pieces are not there.
When the RAMS did the bike give away the fans had an interest in staying in their seats to see what happened.
This is no different then supplying them with a good show while we are out on the track.
I know what you are going to say:
If the racing is close and competitive they will see a good show.
And I agree.
But you must admit if the cars are faster and more exiting to watch this will boost interest as well.
The fans have the same feelings as most all true racers.
They think just like you and I do.
The faster you can go the more fun it will be.
NO ONE RIDES THE ROLLER COASTER MORE THAN ONCE IF IT IS NOT JUST A BIT SCARY!
My kids call that BORING!
The idea is to find a balance between speed and cost for the competitors.
TOO SLOW--BORING!
TOO EXPENSIVE--3 or 4 cars running away with the show. BORING!

I am not sure I would want to be in Mel's shoes.
It must be gut wrenching as a former racer to have to decide all of this for each and every class.

As many times as we chastise Mel here for this or that, he has gained more of my respect the more I learn about the track and it's operation.
This is a tuff business to operate in this area as he is not the only track competing for the entertainment dollars.
I am willing to see if we can help rather than try to decide which rules we think are better than others.
None of us have ever been a track owner or an event promoter for that matter.
On the other hand I don't think we should lay down either.
If we have a product to sell we should be working to refine it.
If this means make the cars faster each season we can all agree with that, but don't change all of the rules at once.
This causes the competitors a great expense over the off season and we simply don't have the funds to make wholesale changes to our programs during this time.

I think I will ask Mel if I can do some polling at the track this season (after all it is an election year)to see just where the fans come in on this.
A simple answer the question form that we can have the ticket folks hand out when you come in.
Compile this information and see what the fans truly want to see from the Mini Stock class or if they want to see us out there at all.
This would once and for all settle this debate.

I could Handel this for Mel and present the information to him.
This way we all would know what we must go to attract the best crowd and help interest in the class.

As a team owner and organizer I have learned many things in a short time about Saturday Night Short Track.
The most important thing I have learned is to listen.
I have listened to all of those who have cared to add their opinions to this thread and I must say that I don't hear to many voices speaking out against making the cars just a touch faster without going over board.
Doe Run had to loose the vacuum rule to try to attract more cars to their track.
No one screamed at them for OPENING UP THE RULES.

No matter which side of this we fall on, the fact is most of us will still be out there each and every week.
I have said it before and I will say it again.
Racing is in our blood.
Short of death, it is hard to not be involved it some form of it.

Most of us will indeed be faster this coming year for many reasons.
Seat time, new power plants, better tires, just to name a few.
So the cars will be faster than last season anyway.
I know we found some problems that we have already begun to solve that should make our cars faster in 08 and we haven't spent any of the 08 budget yet.
These were simple things that I over looked and we now have a handle on.
Mr. Shannon said it best.
If you want to win.
Take your car off the trailer each week and change something to help make it better.
He never said throw more money at the problems.
Work to change how the car behaves in the turns so you can get back to the gas faster. This alone would have put us in the winners circle a time or two this past year.

I can't wait until next year.

Happy Holidays every one.

Uncle Ed,

I live about 10 minutes from I-55 raceway and went to the races their several times over a summer and I to would take the time to go get a beer or go to the bathroom when the pro-4s would race. Saying to Dad, why do they even run these cars, they are slow. I now have a new perspective after driving the 01 car, they may look slow, but after your behind the wheel it feels like your doing 100 mph sometimes. I have a new respect for these drivers. Maybe have a 2-seater car and take fans for a ride at intermission and they to may get a different perspective. It was fun racing with everyone from MCS and looking forward to the 08 season. I'm sure we will be up that way a few times in 08.

thanks

Steve Heitman
01 mini

Thanks for coming up!

Thanks Steve for coming up to MCS.

We had fun also last year.
I have not driven any of the cars during a race but I have been out on the track and you are right.
This is crazy and if the fans could experience that it would bring a whole new bunch of them out to try it.
Rob Denny had the second seat in his car and it was among some of the most memorable things I have ever seen.
The look on the faces of those who were brave enough to go for a ride during a race was priceless.
I like the idea of passengers for profit!
Could I charge them 10 bucks to go with one of my drivers on the track?

LOL!

I could make an extra 30 bucks every week end!

Could I put the seat in the rear of the car facing to the back so they could watch the cars as the pass us.
We need more rear weight so this might help us.
Can you imagine riding back-wards with all of those screaming minis trying to eat you for dinner.

That would be a cool place to sit.:D

I think I am going to install a forward and rear view video cameras for 08.
Just think of the "You Tube" stuff we could put up.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone:

Uncle "Pass me the Turkey" Ed.:)

Rear Seat

Uncle Ed,

A rear facing seat wouldn't be to good in our car. There would be nothing to watch! LOL :)

10 bucks a ride, your cheap, I would want my pit pass.

We have been there too!

Yep:

I hear you.

Life is hard looking at it from the back of the back.
I completely understand that.
Look at it this way if your passenger is facing to the rear they get to see the best cars with their MCS outlaw engines fly by when they lap you on the third lap.
And I am not sure about the pit pass.
Mel will charge them to get into the pits and then we charge them as well,
that's 50 bucks out of their pocket just to go for a ride in the economy class.

Hell:
For 50 bucks I want to go for a ride in a late model....:D

Have a great Holiday Guys::)

Uncle Ed.

We know when there is nothing we can do Jim. We do not have your connections to get the rules changed to what we want even though we are the majority.

We could make up stories to get people arguing to keep this thread going but that is not going to help us in anyway.
