Rousch Crying About Toyota's

You guys that don't like "riceburners" need to get over it. If you don't like a certain "brand" (ie. Ford, Chevy, Toyota, etc.), that's one thing, but to hold on to the the archaic thinking of "I hate it because the company is based in another country" just shows how behind the times you are. I'm a union man, and Toyota has a model that is built by UAW workers and is on our "acceptable" cars to buy list. Maybe the main profits do go back to Japan, but allot of Americans make their living building these cars. Besides the plant workers, you've got the salesman, mechanics, all the office support people, etc. making their living off of these "riceburners". Not to mention the construction workers who build the plants and dealerships. Times have changed like it or not. I think there are only one or two models of American cars that are actually 100% American, parts and all. Almost every car or truck out there has parts that are manufactured in other countries. So just how American is your "American" car?

Toyota beat the system

I don't remember when this occured but the government upped the import taxes on the toyota cars and trucks becouse of the amount of sales the company was getting. The company decided that they would assemble all their American based cars and trucks in the US including manufacturing a majority of the parts here also. It was cheaper for Toyota build all these plants in the states then to pay the import taxes that the big 3 pushed the government into applying on all the imports (toyota, mazda, volkswagon, ect.). The thing with toyota is that they are teamed up with GMC/Chevy. I know becouse at TG USA which is located in Perryville, the have the parts made there for the hummer, the gmc and chevy truck lines, the chevy cobalt, and many more. What killed the big 3 was the NAFTA act put into affect several years ago. The big 3 was having vehivles assembled in Mexico and Canad, was NOT getting taxed on them to ship them back into the states, and was getting cheaper labor. Only thing is, the quality dropped tremendously. Toyota and the Japanese are extremely picky when it comes to product quality, my crew man works at TG USA and has to go through 30 differant quality control inspections before it is allowed to go to the rest of the plant. I look at it like this, the only make that is competeing in nextell that is american made is toyota, so as far as I am concerned, the big 3 are the imports. Sorry about the book, but the big 3 has brought on their own demise themselves.

My thoughts exactly. If an auto manufacturer creates good paying jobs for Americans by building plants here, why should I care whether the profits go to an executive living in Grosse Pointe, Michigan or Osaka, Japan?

Union man,so am I, and 99% of my family is also. So what's your point? My point is, I don't like the overseas companies coming over here and buying up this country hand over fist that American blood has been shed for,so they can pad thier pockets and buy up some more of it. I'm sure Toyota and others make good cars, but I won't buy one, support them on a track or whatever, and that's the bottom line, and I'll be damned if I'm going to be brainwashed into thinking that in the long run it's going to benefit this country. That's the kind of American I am.So let's hear it!!

Well..you can get mad all you want about the foreign companies coming here..buying our land and producing what you call is a foreign vehicle. But..for 10 years...american companies knew that their prodcuts were becoming obsolete compared to the foreign competition and they needed to step up to the plate. Make a better product..cheaper..and add incentives. What have they done?? worried more about the CEO's getting their bonuses and have slacked on production. I look at it this way. They come here..they have to pay taxes on the land they buy. Workers..have to pay taxes on their incomes..which they pay rather well. Cars that are sold have to have taxes paid in the US before any money goes overseas. Its better than all the plants closing ..land all sitting..workers laid off and economy even goes more in the toilet.

I think its fairly simple.

If the big three could make vehicles as reliable as the toyota and other japanese companies, they would have a chance. My dad has been union all his life and only buys toyota's. It shows people's inteligence if they know they are buying a lesser quality vehicle just because its an american name. Toyota just needs to come out with a diesel full size truck and they will take over that market too.

If you doubt my intelligence here's my phone number 573-431-6775 and we can discuss it.

Did you buy a vehicle thinking/knowing it is made to a lesser standard than others but bought it anyway because it has an american name?

Then I guess I wasn't talking about you. So go take your tough guy attitude somewhere else. I have better things to do with my time than call some guy who wants to argue over the phone about whether he lacks inteligence or not. Have a good one buddy.

Lesser standard?

You guy's probably know a lot more about racing and real life issues, such as is your Toyota better than my Ford..... but as long as I have a choice it will be an American company that I buy from. The quality issue is most likely more perception than reality, 25 years ago you may of had an argument but the U.S. companys have stepped it up in that regard. Do they need to build cars that entice people to buy ? yes and they will or go out of business. As for NASCAR? they are doing it solely for the money Toyota brings, will it be better for the sport? who knows? lets see how much of Toyota's support trickles down to joe average.

I think I made my point. Allot of good American people make their living building these cars. In fact, some of them are union brothers and sisters. I think the fact that they are making a decent living is enough "benefit" for me. You have a right to your opinion and I have a right to mine. However, unlike you I don't won't come on like a tough guy just because someone disagrees with me, or call them a lesser American because they have a different opinion. Attitudes like that have lessened the power of unions to the point that in an area where unions once controlled 90% of all construction projects, it's now down to around 30%. My way or the highway just doesn't cut it anymore. Like I said, like it or not times have changed. You can choose to be bitter about it, or go with the flow.

Well said Dennis!! Excellent post

So does this mean we should stop going to the gas stations and buying gas because it's all refined from foreign oil? Or stop buying clothes because they are made from foreign manufactured textiles? For that matter, don't buy fresh fruit at the grocery store, because chances are in the winter it is imported. Then there are all the shoes made in foreign factories we buy and wear every day. Paper is generally manufactured overseas, American mills couldn't supply the demand. The very computer you are typing probably has at it's core a chip made in an Asian factory, designed by a Japanese engineer. Cell phones that we use every day are foreign made (Nokia, Samsung, etc). The list goes on and on. I really think Pitboss is right, times have changed and we can no longer sustain ourselves in isolation, and we probably haven't been able to since Abe Lincoln was in the Oval Office.

I can't wait for the first Ferrari in NASCAR.:)

If you love the Toyota, thats fine, but this old archaic guy has been driving a Chevy or Ford forever and that ain't gonna change.(To each his own)
