Smoking Ban Jan 1,2007

If you give your child alcohol that is abuse under the law and you can have your child taken away from you. There is no law saying that my smoking is abuse and I can have them taken from me because of that.Trust me I know it was used against me in court that I smoke and the judge said it doesn't matter. MY children are MY children not the governments children. I should be able to raise MY children the way I see fit. I'm not says that I should be allowed to beat them or burn them or chock them till they pass out. You say the government isn't trying to control us and take away our rights? This is my PERSONAL PROPERTY I paid for it with my own hard earned money. I paid taxes on that property. How dare the government tell me I can or can't smoke in it.

Ok King, you are a gun person as I have read. I will admit I know nothing about guns and gun laws. I personally hate guns, but that is me. I do think that a couple of years ago they changed the law and you can now carry a concealed weapon in a car right? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Now lets say this year they change the law again and say you can no longer carry a concealed weapon in your car. Wouldn't they be taking away your rights? Wouldn't you be as upset as smoker are over the new laws passed?

So is this what your saying?

Even though it is harmful for my child, because it isn't against the law now, the government should never make a new law making it illegal, and both the government and I should ignore the health threats I am forcing upon my child.

If this is the case, why aren't you crusading for the repeal of the lead paint ban? Until 1970something lead paint was legal to use. Then the same type of experts and scientist that tell us second hand smoke is harmful, discovered that kids were becoming ill and sometimes dying from ingesting the paint chips found in homes. Are you saying the government should have never been allowed to ban lead paint too?

Yes, changing a gun law would be altering my rights as a ccw holder. Would I be upset? Probably, but to what degree would depend upon why the change was necessary. If it was because people were abusing their right to carry. Not upset at all. Sometimes laws and rights must be changed for our own well being. Like I said, it would depend upon why the change is necessary. Would I be as upset as the smokers are...NO WAY!

It does not matter how much we B**ch About all of the issue that have been brought up in this forum, we will never reach a common ground. I Can say I don't like this about a person or that about a person---:Oh well. Everyone has there own thoughts on smoking, drinking, gun control, the government. None of us wil ever win. One thing that we all have in common is racing---To all I hope everyone has a great '08 season. Good Luck to all.

Last Friday evening my wife and I went to a restaurant in Centralia, Illinois called the Corner Cafe. The last time we were there we went for breakfast on a Saturday morning. This place was packed and at least half of the people there were smoking. Well on Friday evening - with No Smoking signs placed on the doors this place was STILL PACKED! In fact - we had to WAIT for a table. We were there about an hour and MANY PEOPLE HAD TO WAIT FOR A TABLE! Sure didn't hurt this business.

That's because Lisa has the BEST food and SERVICE in the area. Even when the smoke was in the place it was very hard to tell. They had a very good smoking system set up. I think Her and Mark both smoke. But ' as a general day to day on their business I would like to see the books. I live right down the road from the Corner and it has always been VERY busy. Doesn't seem as busy this month. But , to someone who is visiting it would appear to be booming w/ no change. As I said " THEY ARE THE BEST IN TOWN HANDS DOWN "

I watched a program a few weeks ago about how there is something in microwave popcorn that is causing some kind of health problems. I can't remember what exactly it was, but I am sure one of you could research it & find out. It was mostly for the people in the factory making it, but they said it could harm us fine folks that make it in our microwave at home as well.

The King's square footage thing was interesting, but I have one question, has NIOSH, OSHA or any other goverment outfit like that gave specifics on how many cigs can be burned in a certian amount of square footage before it is actually harmfull to others?

I don't believe this law will affect the resturants at all. I don't really like breathing smoke when eating and neither do most. The bars on the other hand are a different story. I know my local watering holes have seen a loss in business and that is a fact. No need to put the "how can they already tell" spin on it either, because it is obvious.

Again, I think everyone needs to agree we disagree....

I am off to build some race cars, see you all tonight..LOL!

4) I still want to know who gets introuble if your kid has a butt in his mouth, riding on the roof of your car?

I am not sure who gets in trouble. You can probally count on me cause I am
ALWAYS in trouble..... :( I guess I will have to attach some chicken wire up there to eliminate this from happening. Run some wires through the roof so she can catch a movie along the way as well... I am thinking you guys smokers or not will take this idea and run with it. Remember where you learned it first ;)

Sean there has been multiple cases on the popcorn deal. Now we are seeing consumers suing do to the harm it has caused them. I believe it has to do with the lungs ...

Sean,
This is an extremely rough time for restaraunts and bars. And not just in IL. In St. Charles, directly across the highway from our business, the following restaraunts closed their doors this past Monday: Kreigers Pub, Lonestar Steakhouse, and Popeyes Chicken. Here in Troy, we've lost Chubby's (a mom/pos restaraunt that is now only open for limited hours) and an Imos Pizza. There are rumors of two others going out, RiversEdge Pizza, and Landmark Restaraunt. The financer of an Italian restaraunt that was going to build a new location suddenly has suddenly backed out too. All of this has happened in the last month.

This year it doesn't seem to be the normal after holiday slow down. We are used to our business dropping 10-15% this time of year, but this year its much worse. We seem to do our normal business on Thurs/Fri/Sat. but the rest of the week is dead. Our Troy restaraunt is not even breaking even right now. We are averaging $800/day in sales for Jan. 08, we were averaging over $1700 in Oct and Nov. I was talking to a fellow COC member who stopped in to eat on Monday, he told me everyone was slow and that even Walmart (which is the biggest revenue in this town) was off over 30%.

Hope this wasn't to much spin. I wouldn't want to get anyone upset.:)

Sounds good - Do you have some chicken fingers drowned in the hottest sauce you can drown them in? That will keep those little heel nippers out of my lunch. Good idea Linda. Send extra napkins this could get messy :D

CA has had the state wide smoking ban since Jan. 1998. I'm sorry but I do not believe that restaraunts and bars are still closing their doors 10 years later as a direct result of the ban.

Not sure about the other states and Canada. But if their bans are not state wide your not comparing apples to apples. Sure smoking patrons will go to restaraunts in neighboring cities that allow smoking if given the choice. Stop smoking state wide and they can't "city hop".

Who ever wrote that article on the encyclopedia website is definately a disciple of Alex Jones and Ron Paul.

King I agree:eek: don't fall over. I also don't believe that in the two weeks since the IL ban that place have closed due to the ban.

On the not smoking in a car with kids in it. I'm going to agree to disagree with you on that. Nothing you say to me will make me change my mind and nothing I say will make you change your mind.

Does anyone know what the fine is for smoking in a car with a child in it? Not that I'm going to smoke in IL with a kid in my car. I was just wondering if the fine is strong enough to make he people who think "Its my kids its my car I will do whatever I want" about it before breaking the law.
