DW'S THOUGHTS ON THE SITUATION......

In no way, shape, form or fashion is it my intention or anyone else's intention to pick on Tony. It would be my desire that NASCAR would put Tony in a position where he had to be a little more cautious on the race track.
If you're a Tony Stewart fan, you can't help but be concerned and wonder what's going on. I talked to Tony before the Talladega race, and he said that in some of the situations in which he had gotten involved, we only saw what he did, not what someone else did. Quite honestly, retaliation is not something that I would recommend, but he said that we only show the things that he's done on the race track. I told him that we have cameras around the track. We pick up the action where it is, and we talk about what we see:

At Darlington, Tony ran over Andy Hillenburg, a slow car that was in Tony's way. Tony retaliated later in the race against Kasey Kahne. That was one of those weekends when you say, "Man, Tony's being a little rough this weekend."
Fast forward to Bristol when Scott Wimmer was doing absolutely nothing on the race track, and, all of the sudden, Tony got mad at Scott and retaliated against him.
Keep moving forward to Martinsville. There were a couple of incidents there with Ryan Newman and Rusty Wallace.
Fast forward up to Talladega and the incidents with Kurt Busch and Terry Labonte. The Labonte incident was one of the most bizarre things that I've ever seen. After the race, Tony was coming down across the start/finish line, and, unexpectedly, he just made a sharp left-hand turn right into the path of Labonte and tore up both the 20 and 5 cars.
In California, Tony had a couple more incidents. One with Jeff Gordon, one with Rusty Wallace and then one later on with Ricky Rudd. Sometimes guys with a lot of talent and ability do things that others find offensive. Poking around on people might be just having fun to one guy while others might not see the humor in such moves.
Folks, I want you to understand something. I like Tony a lot, and I love his outgoing and aggressive personality. I like a guy who shoots from the hip and tells it like it is, but, by the same token, NASCAR has a responsibility to keep control of the event, and -- equally important -- the people who participate in the event. I know they had a meeting with Tony in California. I have no idea what was said, but if the sanctioning body had a meeting with you, you would assume that you would see a change and an improvement. I'm not sure that we did after the California rac

I like to make analogies. Think about it this way. If you're going down the road, and you're running a few miles an hour over the speed limit. You get pulled over, and the officer says, "Since this the first time you've been pulled over, I'm going to give you a warning, but watch the speed." A few days later, you're going down the same road, and you get pulled over again. The officer says, "Hey, I gave you a warning, and today, I'm going to have to give you a ticket." A few more days go by, and you're going down the same road again. The guy pulls you over again, and the officer says, "I gave you a warning. I gave you a ticket. Now I'm going to have to park you."

All I know is every time that NASCAR takes what some would consider an extreme action -- parking a guy to get his attention -- that extreme action has made a difference. I saw it happen to Ernie Irvan and Kevin Harvick, and they did a much better job of controlling their emotions on and off the track after NASCAR clamped down on them.

This sport requires you to control your temper, your emotions and your actions. You can't go around retaliating against people every time somebody does something that you don't like. Tony has a great team, and he's got a car that can win every week. He needs to capitalize on those assets and stop making crew chiefs, drivers and fans angry.
