UMP Modified National Champion Argument...

And how much did he spend to get the 20k
I guarantee he spends less than most of the guys mentioned. He doesn't have a big fancy stacker, and his equipment is right in line with Harrison's, so it's not like he has a brand new mb customs or Mbr car every year. Plus he's got a ton of product sponsors...He definitely doesn't out dollar everyone for the championship.

I give him (and anyone else staying close to home) props for supporting their local tracks! Whatever your opinion is of the players involved, no one can deny the fact that a certain amount of travel is required to run for the "national" championship. And that, IMO, has helped lead to the thinning of the grandstands over the last 25 - 30 years. Racers chasing points became gypsies and the ones that hit the road seemed to be the same ones that had the biggest fan followings. When they left, their fans did too.

The closest anyone has ever come to creating a completely level playing field for drivers to run equal cars on the same tracks they all had the same chance in was IROC.

In any division, track, series, sanction, etc, there are always going to be some guys with the edge over others in terms of experience, the competition they race against, the track type, the length of the track, the type of car they are in. Racing isn't fair. Never has been, never will be. Just run where you think you have the best chance of winning, because nothing else matters.

This is why, IMO, the guys like Andretti, Foyt', Stewart, Hill, Clark, etc were the best "pure racing drivers" ever. They didn't specialize in one kind of car or style of racing, they jumped in anything with pedals and a steering wheel and made whatever they were piloting a winner, against whomever else showed up that day to race. Which pretty much makes these kinds of debates pointless, because the guys you are talking about just race modifieds around the midwest, and they don't have the luxury of choosing who they race or when they race. The car they drive, their budget and the venues available to them are all they have.

They're pretty good at what they do, and that in itself should be enough. Debating who is better is meaningless, they are both very good at what they do and everything else is not something that is down to them to choose.

While everyone is arguing over who is better between Harrison and Gilpin...Since they both drive Impressive Race Cars, who can bring a good argument of why another chassis manufacturer is better than Impressive?? After all, they both win many races in the same car and I would about bet there are far from Pierce, Shaw, and GRT cars out there! I don't think there are as many Bandit and Elite cars out there yet but they seem to be becoming more common. I wouldn't say any feature win an "easy win" unless you are Scott Bloomquist racing for a $1,000 to win weekly show. The 24h and 1G both have the same resources as their competition so any feature win is earned IMO.

A friend and I always have this argument about Devin Gilpin
And then the rest of the guys running for national championships in the modified class..I'm not starting this post to bash Gilpin it's more to applaud the mod guys in this area.. For example week in and week out Harrison is battling guys like Long, Mevert, Kinder, Griffaw, Mullins, Nicely etc..... That's tough competition and those are the guys you usually see at the big shows.. Im not slamming the guys that Gilpin run against, but I don't see much of a comparison in it.. Very rarely you see Gilpin at any of the big money shows in this area and when I say this area I'm talking from Haubstadt to ky lake to Fairbury to tri city.. As a rule if there's money to be had most of these guys I mentioned are there that Harrison races against.. The competition around this area is so much greater than what Gilpin runs against... Gilpin has been to mod mania a couple times and he never does well here... Why?? Is it because of the competition?? I just feel Harrison deals with a lot more competition than Gilpin... Please post if you have an opinion...

I would think it is fair to say that drivers of that caliber, have a great understanding of what makes a modified work...guys like Gilpin, Harrison, Griffaw, Mevert, Hoffman, etc can win on any type of track... big or small wet or dry high bank or no bank... it doesn't matter and it is no coincidence in my opinion... these guys have made countless laps and spent crazy hours in the shop.. heck sometimes running mid pack and swallowing pride just trying to learn what works...congrats guys because in my opinion every win you get is a hard earned win... period keep up the great work I almost feel guilty sitting in the stands eating hotdogs and downing cold beverages knowing you guys work so hard to make a great show. thanks and best of luck
